Study of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s Poem “Where the Mind is Without Fear”: A Global Human Manifesto and Its Contemporary Relevance

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s poem “Where the Mind is Without Fear” is a priceless treasure of Indian literature and philosophy. It is not merely a patriotic prayer written during the colonial period, but a universal message that remains equally relevant today. In this poem, Tagore envisions a society free from fear, narrow-mindedness, and ignorance—a world where truth, knowledge, unity, and moral awareness prevail. In the present global context, the poem directly engages with many contemporary challenges. The crisis of democratic values, censorship, political polarization, inequality, communal tensions, and the rise of fake news all bring Tagore’s ideas back to life. According to him, only a mind free from fear can think independently and reach the highest levels of creativity. Universal access to education, respect for truth and reason, tireless effort, and the pursuit of excellence are essential elements for the sustainable progress of modern society. Moreover, Tagore’s message goes beyond material progress; it emphasizes the need for moral and spiritual awakening. In today’s age of consumerism and environmental crises, the poem calls for the revival of empathy, compassion, and the ideals of global humanism. This research paper analyzes the core themes of the poem and demonstrates that Gurudev Tagore’s vision remains deeply significant in the context of democracy, education, human rights, peace, and sustainable development. Thus, the poem stands not only as a historical legacy of the past but also as a guiding beacon for the present and the future.
Abstract in Hindi Language: गुरुदेव रवीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर की कविता “जहाँ भय से मन मुक्त हो” भारतीय साहित्य और दर्शन की अमूल्य धरोहर है। यह केवल औपनिवेशिक काल की परिस्थितियों में लिखी गई देशभक्ति प्रार्थना नहीं है, बल्कि एक ऐसा सार्वभौमिक संदेश है जो आज भी उतना ही प्रासंगिक है। इस कविता में टैगोर ने भय, संकीर्णता और अज्ञान से मुक्त समाज की कल्पना की है जहाँ सत्य, ज्ञान, एकता और नैतिक चेतना सर्वोपरि हों। वर्तमान वैश्विक परिदृश्य में यह कविता अनेक समकालीन चुनौतियों से सीधा संवाद करती है। लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों पर संकट, सेंसरशिप, राजनीतिक ध्रुवीकरण, असमानता, साम्प्रदायिक तनाव, और फेक न्यूज़ जैसी समस्याएँ टैगोर के विचारों को पुनः जीवंत बनाती हैं। उनके अनुसार, भय से मुक्त होकर ही मनुष्य स्वतंत्र चिंतन कर सकता है और रचनात्मकता के उच्च शिखर तक पहुँच सकता है। शिक्षा की सार्वभौमिक पहुँच, सत्य और तर्क की प्रतिष्ठा, अथक प्रयत्न तथा उत्कृष्टता की खोज ये सब तत्व आधुनिक समाज के सतत विकास हेतु अनिवार्य हैं।इसके साथ ही टैगोर का संदेश केवल भौतिक प्रगति तक सीमित नहीं है; यह नैतिक और आध्यात्मिक जागरण की आवश्यकता पर भी बल देता है। आज के उपभोक्तावादी और पर्यावरणीय संकटग्रस्त युग में यह कविता सहानुभूति, करुणा और वैश्विक मानवीयता के आदर्शों को पुनः स्थापित करने का आह्वान करती है। इस शोध-पत्र में कविता के मूल भावों का विश्लेषण करते हुए यह दर्शाया गया है कि गुरुदेव रवीन्द्रनाथ की दृष्टि आज भी लोकतंत्र, शिक्षा, मानवाधिकार, शांति और सतत विकास के संदर्भ में अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। इस प्रकार, यह कविता न केवल अतीत की ऐतिहासिक धरोहर है, बल्कि वर्तमान और भविष्य के लिए भी मार्गदर्शक प्रकाशस्तंभ है।
