Indian regional languages, like Malayalam, are crucial for preserving and transmitting the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). NEP 2020 emphasizes their importance in education by advocating the use of Indian languages as a medium of instruction, especially at the foundational and early education stages. By promoting regional languages, a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to education is the focus of NEP 2020, where students can learn about IKS alongside global learning traditions. This integration is intended to help students develop a well-grounded perspective, acknowledging the value of indigenous wisdom in addressing modern-day challenges. This study examines the representation of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) concepts in Malayalam school science textbooks. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to identify the presence of SRL terminology in Malayalam science textbooks and teachers' handbooks for grades VII and IX. The study first involved developing a Malayalam SRL terminology framework through expert consultations and linguistic analysis. This framework was then used to analyse the textual content of the textbooks and handbooks. Findings revealed that while the textbooks did not explicitly use SRL terminology, there were latent references to SRL concepts within the activities and tasks. However, the teachers' handbooks explicitly mentioned SRL concepts and guided, on how to implement SRL strategies in the classroom. The findings highlight the need for a more deliberate and explicit integration of the SRL language in Malayalam textbooks to support students' self-regulated learning.
